The sound comes first

A Great Hornbill does not arrive quietly. The wings are so large and the feathers so stiff that each beat pushes air with a sound you feel as much as hear. I heard this one before I found it, turned, and there it was, settling into the tree with that huge yellow casque catching the light.

It is the biggest hornbill in Thailand, well over a metre from bill to tail. Hornbills pair for life, which is why Thais treat them as a symbol of faithful love. Seeing one in a wild tree is still a small shock every time.

I had the 70-300mm at the long end and still wanted more. That is always the case with hornbills. You take the frame you are given.
