Yellow in the green

Black-crested Bulbul in the leaves

Most of this frame is leaves. That is what a Black-crested Bulbul's world looks like: forest edge, dense cover, and the occasional gap it drops into to look around. The bird is a small patch of yellow with a black head and a crest it raises when it is curious.

They are not shy, exactly, but they are busy. This one moved through the canopy in short hops, never on one branch for more than a few seconds, calling the whole time. The trick was not to follow it. I picked the branch with the cleanest background and waited for it to come back.

It came back.
