Under the eaves

House Sparrow under the eaves

House Sparrows moved in with people somewhere around the time people started building houses, and they have not left since. This one was on a dark beam under the eaves, out of the sun, with a wall of white behind it that turned the whole scene into shapes.

It is a male: grey crown, black bib, chestnut on the nape. He sat sideways to me for a while, then turned his head to look, and that is the frame. Sparrows are quick to leave, so you take the one look you get.

The geometry is what I like. Diagonal beam, vertical wall, one small bird where the lines meet.
