White on brown

The forest floor was every shade of brown and the butterfly was not. That is the whole photograph. A Large White resting with its wings closed, which shows the pale yellow underside rather than the white top, on a bed of dead leaves and gravel.

Large Whites are the butterfly gardeners in Europe complain about, because the caterpillars eat cabbages. Out here, on the ground, it was just a small pale shape taking the sun. Butterflies do this to warm up. They cannot fly until their flight muscles reach temperature.

I lay down for this one. It is always worth lying down.
