Afternoon dog

It was the hottest part of the day and the dog had found the only strip of shade on the street. It stood there panting, eyes half shut, in the state dogs reach in the tropics where they are technically awake but have stopped participating.
Thai street dogs have a look: lean, short-coated, a colour somewhere between sand and rust, and a face that has seen everything the street has to offer. This one was calm and unbothered and let me get close.
The light was hard and flat and the pavement was grey. The dog is the only warm thing in the frame, which is why I kept it.
